Research Proves That Romantic Love Is as Addictive as Cocaine

Research Proves That Romantic Love Is as Addictive as Cocaine: "Robert Palmer relates how you can’t sleep, you can’t eat, you can’t breathe, and your heart beats double time. Why? Because you’re “Addicted to Love,” that’s why. And, as it turns out, Palmer is right; you can be addicted to love. What’s more, just like a drug addict or chain smoker, you’re going to have a hard time overcoming your addiction, as proven by two studies, one concentrating on new love, the other on rejection.
Study of Early Stages of Intense Romantic Love
In May 2005, a study titled “Reward, Motivation and Emotion Systems Associated with Early-Stage Intense Romantic Love” was released in the Journal of Neurophysiology, a publication of the American Physiological Society. The study reported that a team of researchers led by a neuroscientist, an anthropologist, and a social psychologist used a functional magnetic resonance imaging machine (fMRI) to detect love-related neurophysiological systems in the brains of young men and women who were in new relationships and described themselves as being madly in love. (American, 2005)
Arthur Aron, of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and one of the leading researchers in the study, relates that “romantic love is probably best characterized as a motivation or goal-oriented state that leads to various specific emotions, such as euphoria or anxiety.” Consequently, as he says, “It becomes clearer why the lover expresses such an imperative to pursue his or her beloved and protect the relationship” (American, 2005)."
